HARD TWIST

The Gladstone Hotel's 3rd Annual Juried Textile Exhibition
Sat Nov 08, 2008 to Sun Jan 04, 2008
Exhibition Hours 12pm-5pm Daily

Love may make the world go round, but twist holds it together.

Following on from last year's BIG FIBRE/little fibre exhibition that asked whether size matters in matters textile, Hard Twist explores the manifold and marvelous ways twist operates in the world of fibre.

Tightly-wound or softly spun, bent, hung or strung out, the works in the show reference a wild variety of issues: including the musings of Canada's first official hangman, a Queen St. West crawl, sharks, dandelions and motherhood (sans apple pie), sports memorabilia and coral reefs, threaded together by their common dependence on twist for coherence and structural integrity.

The first human who twisted a few strands together to make them longer and stronger had no idea of the force she had unleashed upon the world!

2008 Participating Artists Hard Twist:

Gareth Bate, Amélie Brisson-Darveau, Nadia Li Chai, Laura Endacott, Caitlin Erskine-Smith, Ann Marie Hadcock, Peter Harris, Susan Harris, Tricia Johnson, Lisa Keophila, Vanessa Li, Lesley Loksi Chan, Emily Martin, Amanda McCavour, Bev McNaughton, Gordana Olujic Dosic, Tammy Osler, Ingrid Paulson, Meghan Price, Laura Smith, Ilona Staples, Casey Ann Wasniewski, and Bonnie Whitehall.

SWAP PROPOSAL: your used security envelopes for a set of security envelopes buttons

The muchly missed Becky Johnson wrote from her Craft Odyssey Roadtrip (follow her adventures on her blog) to ask us to spread her swap proposal concerning used security envelopes. Please contact her here if you would like to partake, or check out her show schedule to plot an in person exchange. Here is an excerpt from her blog post about it:

security buttons

i am now willing to offer you some free gifts in exchange for used security envelopes. that's right, i will send you a set of security envelopes buttons in exchange for a contribution of old security envelopes from you. if anyone from overseas reads this, i am especially interested in what wild foreign envelopes might be out there and especially implore you to send me some.

if this strikes your fancy, just email me for shipping info and we can get rolling!

it's a pretty good deal, eh? you send me garbage and i send you other non-garbage stuff.

some rules (for what is life without them?):
1. only used envelopes. this is a project of reuse.
2. no logos or words. i have found some companies put their logo inside their envelopes. i have deemed these unacceptable for this project.

HELP WANTED: Kiln sought for ceramic transfer project

A note from TCA reader Rebecca:

Kiln-Flickr-VeraShanleyPottery

Do any of the TCA Readers have access to a kiln they would be willing to rent?

My crafty friend and I are really quite susceptible to even the slightest hint of crafty fun. We recently came across this tutorial and want to give it a try. I think we've found a vendor who will print decals for us (though we'd prefer a Canadian supplier if anyone knows of one). What we need now is to find someone willing to rent kiln time so that we can fire the transfers to our glazed ceramicware and we're off to the races. If it's important to know, our plan is to create some dishes to give to friends and family as gifts. We aren't trying to compete with any of the wonderful ceramic artists out there for customers. Not sure if we could, even if we tried! We just really like to try new and fun things and wanted to give this a shot.

Thanks!
Rebecca

Please contact Rebecca here if you can help her out with this request.

CRAFTY CHAT: The Culture Congress at Harbourfront (Nov 14-Nov 16 2008)

The Culture Congress: L'art du CONTACT – how do we make it?
Friday, November 14 – Sunday, November 16, 2008
Harbourfront Centre
235 Queens Quay West, Toronto
Free to Attend!

Harbourfront Centre, in partnership with the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Québec, the Bureau du Québec à Toronto and PME-ART in Montreal, is thrilled to announce the second edition of The Culture Congress taking place from November 14 through November 16, 2008. The Culture Congress is a forum that brings together local, national and international cultural communities for an exchange of ideas, skills, and information.

For this latest edition, in recognition and support of the existing and the continued development of interactions among creative communities in Québec and Ontario, The Culture Congress poses the question: L'art du CONTACT – how do we make it? This exchange enables contact between people, contact with creative works and coincides with Québec Now!, a Toronto-wide exploration of contemporary arts and culture in Québec. In light of the current political climate, it is even more timely for artists to galvanize as a community to break down borders.

Over the course of three days, creators and culture workers from across Canada and abroad will be challenged through a series of workshops, round-table discussions and dialogue. Provocative questions will evolve in consideration of the many facets of making contact. Participants will investigate the artist's contact with physical materials, tools, spaces, and language; the many degrees of connection between artistic works and audience; the impact and potential of collaborative processes and interdependence in creative settings; and the issues, challenges, and practices related to the Québec-Ontario cultural and artistic cooperation. The diversity of perspectives born of each artistic genre on each side of the inter-provincial border will not only add to the vibrant nature of the conversations, but enable exploration into the realities of multidisciplinary approaches.

Registration for The Culture Congress is free. Contact Katherine Grainger, 416-973-4239, or hatch@harbourfrontcentre.com

For additional details visit www.culturecongress.wordpress.com

To further contextualize the scheduled events, participants of The Culture Congress are also encouraged to attend performances taking place during the forum: Bashir Lazhar by Evelyne de la Chenelière, La Pornographie des âmes by Dave St-Pierre and The Montreal Stockhausen Project, all part of Québec Now!, in addition to other local events and exhibitions. Please the website for details: http://www.harbourfrontcentre.com/quebecnow/

EXHIBITION: A World's History - Andrew Wilson at Magic Pony (November 6-30, reception: Nov 6)

Allow yourself to be transported to another world by the visionary artwork of Andrew Wilson, premiering Nov 6th from 7-10pm at Magic Pony.

Elements of 1970's sci-fi and fantasy coalesce in Wilson's evocative paintings. Chronicling the mysterious history of another world, these abstracted landscapes suggest the possibility of parallel universes, alternate realities, and other similarly eerie things to contemplate.

Please join us on this journey to another time and place, and explore a new meaning in the space between.

Magic Pony Presents:

A WORLD'S HISTORY
Andrew Wilson Solo Exhibition

Opening Reception
Thursday, November 6, 2008
7 - 10pm

Location
Magic Pony
694 Queen St. West
416.861.1684

Exhibition Dates: November 6-30, 2008

Magic Pony is pleased to present A World’s History, a solo exhibition of new paintings and drawings by emerging Toronto-based artist Andrew Wilson. Exhibition runs November 6th to 30th. Opening reception is Thursday, Nov. 6th from 7-10pm. Artist will be in attendance.

Chronicling the mysterious history of an alternate world, Wilson’s fantastical abstracted landscapes suggest the possibility of other worlds occurring simultaneously with our own. Past, present and future coalesce within this imagined topography. Futuristic architecture and geodesic domes crown primordial geological forms, while abstract shapes collide. Elaborate, mixed media resin-coated paintings encapsulate vast mountain ranges, crystal-line forms and volcanic interiors. Both gesturally inspired and carefully constructed, Wilson’s paintings combine contrasting layers, textures and colours to subtly create depth.

A World’s History also features a series of meticulously rendered ink drawings. While Wilson’s geometric landscapes and utopian architecture evoke the future tense, his drawings explore an imagined past. Medieval villages and church spires are nestled into mountainsides, while enigmatic faces materialize in organic, Arcimboldo-esque illusion. Quietly beautiful and vaguely haunting, Wilson’s imagery resonates with the vision and mystery of the fantasy genre, yet leaves definitive narrative open to personal interpretation.

Andrew Wilson is currently finishing his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting at The Ontario College of Art. Wilson has exhibited previously with Magic Pony in three-person show Mittenfists, August 2007.

GET SCHOOLED: Holiday Tasters @ nanopod (November & December dates)

CRAFT TORONTO PICS: Japanese Foliage Wooden Box

Japanese Foliage Wooden Box 3, originally uploaded by Sixth & Elm.

Sixth & Elm does some pretty sweet stuff with simple wood boxes. Check it out!

Also, I like this little write up from her profile:

"I am an easily distracted artist, which explains the wide range of mediums I work in. Wood and clay are my favorite, but I also spend a lot of time on etching, wire sculpture, sewing and painting. Over the years I have dabbled my hands in candle and soap making, beading, metal-smithing, crochet, metal etching, papercrafts, stamping and taking things apart to see what’s inside. Ever seen the inside of an antique lab centrifuge?"

VENDOR CALL: OCAD's Whodunit Mystery Art Sale (extended deadline: Oct 31, event: Nov 19 to 22)

Be part of the mystery!
The Ontario College of Art & Design is accepting donations of work for
the OCAD Whodunit? Mystery Art Sale!

SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED to October 31, 2008

In six short years, the Whodunit? OCAD Mystery Art Sale, the Ontario College of Art & Design's signature fundraising event, has established itself as one of Toronto's favourite art events. The support of the OCAD community for Whodunit?, which raised more than $225,000 in 2007 to support our creative environment, has been simply outstanding.

Whodunit? will take place from November 19 to 22, 2008. The 5½" x 7½" works donated by OCAD students, faculty and alumni, as well as by other artists, designers and creative celebrities who support the university, will be exhibited for three days and then offered for sale on the final day, all at the same price of $75.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
  • Request an artist package and create two or more 5½" x 7½" pieces to donate to the sale.
  • Recruit other artists and creative celebrities to donate art work.

NEW THIS YEAR:

Three-dimensional pieces are welcome! Three-dimensional pieces should have a footprint no more than 5½" deep x 7½" wide x 8½" high (14 cm deep x 19 cm wide x 21 cm high). Acid-free cards, generously provided by Aboveground Art Supplies, are included in the artist package for you to use as a base or as a size-template for other base material.

Tax receipts! You will receive a $75 tax receipt for each piece of your work that is sold. Alternately, we are happy to provide a tax receipt for the full value of your work - please see the Submission Guidelines info sheet for further details.

Whodunit? supports OCAD's Library! This year, Whodunit? proceeds will fund resources and upgrades for the Dorothy H. Hoover Library and new student Learning Zone at OCAD. Every piece of art sold supports the learning experience of OCAD students.

Submissions can be (but are not limited to) any of the following:

Advertising
Industrial Design
Photography
Ceramic
Jewellery & Metalsmithing
