::WINTER SPRING 2009 ART CLASS SCHEDULE::


Handbuilding & Wheel Throwing Techniques with Audrey Hudson
This course is for those who want to sample hand building but learn some wheel throwing as well. Mix it up! Learn various hand building techniques including pinch pots, coiling, and slab as well and take a try at throwing. Explore the creative process of working with clay tools, surface decoration and glazes to create personalized pieces.
$185 (materials and taxes included) 5 sessions

Ceramics: Wheel Throwing with Ramona Antaya or Audrey Hudson
Level 1 Learn the basics in wheel throwing techniques to produce cylinders with various functions. A range of decorating methods will be covered. Suitable for all levels of experience these focused workshops are limited to four students at a time.
Level 2 Expand on your basic knowledge of throwing on the pottery wheel. Further projects demonstrate the techniques involved in adding on pieces, such as handles and spouts. Underglaze decoration is also covered. Small classes.

Ceramics: Silk Screening and Clay with Audrey Hudson
Build simple forms and learn basic silk screening techniques to transfer images onto your clay pieces. Whether simple designs, text or your own drawings see the possibilities of silk screening glaze decoration. No silk screening experience necessary although experience with clay will be an asset.

Ceramic Sculpture: Handbuilding with Graham Curry
Learn various hand building techniques including pinch pots, coiling and slab as you construct and model small sculptures. Sculptures may be abstract or representational in form. Students will have a variety of finishing choices including surface textures, scraffito, mason stains, clay slips, under glazes and glazes to explore.
$185 (materials and taxes included) 5 sessions
Tuesdays, May 5, 12, 19, 26 from 7 to 9:30pm

Collage with Sandra Tarantino
This workshop looks at various mediums and tools used in the creation of collage works. Techniques include the use of photocopying, transfer printing, glazing, found objects and built surfaces when combined with more traditional drawing and painting media, 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional objects.

Mixed Media: Assemblage Sandra Tarantino
This workshop will introduce students to explore practices and concepts of a more contemporary approach to art-making. Students will draw upon a wide range of materials and found objects while incorporating various techniques in the fabrication of two and three dimensional works. Examples of projects include the construction of shadow boxes and sculptural assemblages.

Silk Screening with Genevieve Jodouin or Graham Curry
Create your own one of a kind designs on paper and fabric. Projects presented in class include single and multi-colour screen printing. Learn the fundamentals of photo-screenprinting techniques (photo emulsion method) to develop skills through colour separation, creating editions and monoprints or be creative through experimentation with stencil methods, drawing fluid and pastels. These workshops provide information on how to set up a silk screening studio at home. No printmaking experience is required. For beginner and intermediate levels.

Drawing Still Life with Paul Turner
This course will introduce the student to basic drawing techniques using still life. Working from different shaped boxes, jars, orbs and containers, they will learn the principles of form, composition, proportion, line and shading. Student will also be introduced to various drawing implements and papers.

Perspective Drawing with Paul Turner
Learn to solve any perspective problem. This course will cover one and two point perspective for basic and advanced artists. There will be practical applications, specifically on how to translate sketches to a finished drawing on canvas. Understand concepts in depth and learn tricks and tips that will help you in your own studio practice.

Encaustic Techniques and Painting with Graham Curry
Encaustic is a drawing and painting medium using molten wax as paint, mixing medium and preparatory surface. This workshop offers an overview of the medium covering basic techniques, safety issues, and encaustic's versatility in relation to collage, image transfer, mould uses, scraffito and general techniques. In Level 2, you can further develop technical skills by producing complete works. Approaches to colour palette organization, still life and portrait painting is covered.

Acrylic Painting with Graham Curry
Learn and develop painting techniques using acrylic paint and mediums while focusing on the elements of design. Discover how to render form, light, space and colour through various exercises including still life composition or the practice of copying Old Master paintings to produce a finished piece. For beginner and intermediate levels.
$185 (materials and taxes included) 5 sessions

Acrylic Paint Explorations with Graham Curry
In this introductory class learn about the unique properties of acrylic paints and mediums used in contemporary painting. Students will work from their own subject matter choice (from photographs or imagination, representational or abstract) as they explore impasto, blending, scraffito, masking and other techniques. Proper use of painting brushes, tools and supports will be covered.

Saturday Mornings
10:30am to 12:00 noon
Fun workshops for kids ages 4 to 10 interested in exploring a variety of mediums. Call ahead to reserve spots, and dress for mess!
$18 per session or 5 sessions for $80 per child (materials and taxes included)

Please note: For the 5 session package, dates must be selected within the same season in advance. Any substitution for dates must be made at least one week ahead. No refunds for missed classes.

Musical instruments are created in characters of students choice whether animals or people.


Saturday, February 14: Silk Screen Toy Pillow
Kids learn screen printing techniques while creating their own toy.


Saturday, February 21: Clay Dragons and Creatures
Kids learn clay pinch pot techniques to create their own dragon or fantasy creature.


Saturday, February 28: Hundertwasser Watercolour
Students discover the wonderful art of Hundertwasser through a watercolour scene.

Saturday, March 7: Clay Fossils & Ancient Cave Painting
Kids leave their mark with mixed media inspired by ancient cave paintings.


Saturday: March 14: Clay Marionettes
Kids learn about the figure while creating a clay marionette.

Saturday, April 18: Rattle People
Students use recycled bottles and mixed media to create a wonderful musical rattle person.


Saturday, April 25: Clay Wind Chimes
Kids learn about texture and shape as they create clay wind chimes for the backyard.


Saturday, May 2: Clay Birds and Nest
More clay fun for the garden is discovered through a birds nest sculpture in clay.


Saturday, May 9: Clay Aztec Sun
A beautiful clay mask inspired by the Aztec Sun god is created for the garden or home. A wonderful Mother's Day activity.


Saturday, May 16: Puppets
Papier mache and mixed media are used to create fun animal and people puppets.


Saturday, May 23: Clay Face Bowls
Kids discover ceramic South American ancient pottery to create their very own portrait face bowl.


Saturday, May 30: Plaster Sculpture
Students discover artists like Henri Moore and learn about form to create their very own plaster 3-D sculpture.


Saturday: June 6: Cartooning
Kids create their own cartoons while learning step by step drawing techniques.


Saturday, June 13: Picasso Portrait Painting
Kids learn about cubism while creating a portrait painting.


Saturday, June 20: Silk Screening T-shirts
