CRAFT TORONTO PICS: heart2 by shannon.gerard

I've been hard at work making these little crocheted hearts for the City of Craft Valentine's Trunk Sale!

It's hard not to go overboard on Valentine's stuff in the craft world. And while I certainly respect some people's rejection of the holiday and its inherent frills, Shannon Gerard's pattern-making abilities (of possibly, freewheeling sense of sculpture) are undeniably grand.

For those keeping track, Valentine's Day marks my (Becky Johnson) 30th birthday this year. So I am a bit of a connoisseur of Valentine's-themed gifts (or a snob fueled by the birthday baggage of being a tomboy who annually had to smile for doughy teddy bears with hearts sewn to their hands). I also overdosed on cinnamon hearts at a young age. This little coronary creation of Shannon's sums up my general preferences for Valentine giving - a gift that suggests the grotesque while still honouring the fluffiness of the holiday and its symbols of love.
