small town crafty

This is a bit of a self-serving request, but I imagine it will be of interest to others out there who are looking to "discover" Ontario.

Can anyone recommend small towns (or really small cities) not too far from Toronto that have some sort of arts/crafts/design community? I'm not thinking anything too polished/touristy like Jordan or Elora. Within an hour or so of Toronto would be preferable.

I'd really appreciate your tips.

Thanks!

Hmmm...how small is small? Glen Williams is tiny in the geographic sense, but huge on creativity...defintitly polished, though. Prince Edward County, which is near Belleville, is a bit further but has tons of creative towns. It also makes for an awesome road trip, especially in the summer. (mmm...sandy beaches!) There's also Rockwood, Ancaster, Erin, Orageville, Markham, Cobourg, Paris, and my favourite choice of all...lovely Guelph :) I think the key with any small town is knowing when to visit. Ontario Tourism has a pretty good events calendar, as does Guelpharts.ca and Headwaters Tourism. Hope this helps!
