TALK AMONGST YOURSELVES

hmmm, not much crafty happened in my world this weekend, so i'm itching to get back into it. i did pick up some supplies for projects that have been staring at me for months... maybe i'll finish some this week (or start at least). anyone else with some yarns to tell?

as part of the Toronto Craft Alert's goal to galvanize the city's craft community, we'd like to get a bit of a discussion going. discuss any crafty topic you like... we'll be re-posting this thread every monday morning, so that the discussions can continue in the comments section of this post.

hello hello!

I'm a hockey widow at the mo :P Not that I don't like hockey, I actually do, but by the time we get to OT I'm like "meh."

We did another vendor table at an Irish dance competition this weekend, so that was my crafty venture. It was just OK -- I heard a lot of Moms say things like "Ask for it for Christmas/birthday!" Sigh. So we are holding off on doing another one of those things until October-ish (also 'cause the other half of IHTD, Nicole, is expecting in July)

Speaking of July we are definitely moving then -- to the country!! I sort of can't wait :D

Now where is everybody else? *looks around*

Hey!
I can empathize with you on the whole hockey thing! But never fear, it will be over in another game or 2 :)
I enjoy hockey more when the Leafs are actually playing.

I've had a bit of the crafters' "Blahs" lately. Not feeling very motivated, as I don't have anything big lined up any time soon. I did spend last week painting though, which was a nice change of pace. I was working on a commissioned piece for someone that was supposed to be a gift for his brother's wedding. Then he told me that he told his bro that he hired a local artist to create a painting for him and he said he didn't want it! WTF? I dunno... I think that's a little rude, don't you? Someone goes out of their way to get a really unique gift for your wedding and you respond with "I'd rather have something from my registry"???

That was a little disappointing, but the guy who commissioned me said he will still buy it because he wants it for his new apartment.

Where are you moving to IHTD?

I'm totally unmotivated right now craft-wise. I have a mosaic project waiting in the wings that I think I may work on, just to do something different for a change!

Don't you hate fearing "ask for it for Christmas" at shows? Especially when Christmas is SO far away! Ah, I don't miss doing shows...!

oh dear, we're all shlumpy!

MBB, that's just nutty about the painting -- I mean, I get that a registry is there because that's what folks need and all, and I suppose I do wish that all the random friends of my parents that came to my wedding had opted to buy off the registry instead of purchasing random modern looking glass bowls which are NOT my taste..... but a commissioned original work of art???? And not only that. but commissioned by his brother who presumably knows exactly what he would like??? To say no is just plain crazy.

I'm glad the guy is going ahead and getting it for himself -- maybe his brother will see it and be all "Damn me and my shortsightedness!" Ah, sweet revenge LOL

And I didn't even know you painted! Flickr pics pretty please?

LOL Nicole, yes, that really really sucked. And you could see the kids looking at their moms like "Christmas?!? Are you kidding me lady??" But it'd good we've decided to hold off until October anyway --- we've got all these ideas I haven't been able to implement because I've been so busy making stock for the tables.

Oh, and we're moving to Little Britain, which is halfway between Port Perry and Lindsay. I'll try to Flickr some pics, it is really, really country! I love it :D I'm going to have a deck! Two of them!

Yeah, I was a tad insulted that the dude didn't want my painting before he even saw it (and to his knowledge, I hadn't even started it). I guess I should put some pics up on Flickr... never really thought about it because I don't usually sell my work. It's more of a labour of love and a hobby and most of the time I just create paintings to give as gifts to people (often for weddings! hehehe). But I was an "artist" long before I ever started making jewellery. I turned to jewellery because it's easier to sell and faster to make.

Funny, I never heard of Little Britain. Must be WAY out in the boonies! lol! Sounds great though - I love the country. I can't wait to get out of the city and go up to my (uncle's) cottage. 11 more days! Woohoo! I'm sure I'll find some artistic inspiration up there :)

I'll be in Streetsville this weekend for the Bread and Honey Fest.

Could be volatile if I hear the Christmas excuse combined with hot humid weather...I'll be leaping over the table and grabbing some
browsers throats --

"You buy it now if you know whats good for ya!"

Then my wife will chase them around with a gnarled branch ...

Oh cool Dave! Yer going to be in my 'hood :)

I'm herding dancers through a parade in Markham in the morning but I'll pop by on my way back to check it out.

And I feel that customer abuse is fine as long as it fits in with the general aesthetic of your crafting. So gnarled branch, yes, baseball bats, no.

LOL

I'm a bit self-conscious about my paintings... and my photography isn't perfected yet... so please be kind! lol

Love the painting MBB is is finished or you're still working on it? Boo to who ever said they didn't want it!!!! TTYS

Thanks, Jen :)
Yeah, it's pretty much finished. I think I might put a glaze on it, but that's all I have left to do.

As for earrings, I think something simple and not too long would work best with that necklace. You wouldn't want your jewellery to look too cluttered. But we can talk about this by email.

I'm feeling nervous today...I don't know why :S

I have been in a slump lately too. Not getting in the Toronto Outdoor show has got me down. I was really hoping to get in. You can get seen by the "right" people and it's just a great feather in your cap as an Craftsperson\Artist. I think the real why am down is why I didn't get in. They said I didn't fit their criteria WTF!!! I didn't fit in jewelry and I didn't fit in textiles. I use a needle and thread for most of my work so what am I?

Anyway I am going to enter the Queen West Art Crawl I did it last year and I got my work in a gallery maybe this year will be even better.

I have been working on getting my blog up and updating my site but I want to get back to creating. I am going to clean and organized the studio and that will get me back in the grove. It's just hard sometimes when you get rejected by "professionals" you think whats the point? why am I doing this? Are they right is my work no good?

I am just feeling sorry for myself I will be better tomorrow. I am planing to document the cleaning of the studio on my blog if you want to see how I do.

BTW Michelle I LOVE your painting it's great.

Thanks for listening

I know how you feel, Jam, but you can't let it get in your way. I've learned that I am most successful when I "feel" like a success - it really can be mind over matter sometimes. Just keep doing what you're doing and look for your niche.

When is the Art Crawl? Am I too late to apply for that one too? I totally missed the boat on the Outdoor Art thingy and a few other Toronto events. I guess I will be better prepared next year. (This is my first year running my business, so I'm really still learning the ropes).

Thank you so much for the compliments on my painting! I always get so nervous showing my work to people (unless its my jewellery, cause I know my jewellery is cool! hahaha!)
