CRAFTY HAPPENING: The Big Knit at MADE (May 8 - June 28, reception: May 8)

MADE presents – The Big Knit Landscape Section 4

An Installation by Elsworthy Wang (Deborah Wang and William Elsworthy)
Opening Reception Thursday 8th May 7pm to 9pm
Exhibition continues until Saturday 28th June

The Big Knit (Landscape Section 4) is an ongoing serial collaboration between Deborah Wang and William Elsworthy. Using the traditional, practical and applied nature of knit; the artists create work where process becomes an integral component. Wang and Elsworthy's project explores perception of scale, growing and expanding the object. Fibre and knit show the ordinary made extraordinary with massive scale (emphasised within it's tiny environment) and investigations born of their material curiosity.

Elsworthy and Wang share an architecture background. Elsworthy designs for Teeple Architects and Wang for KPMB. Since 2000, Wang and Elsworthy have collaborated on several projects from idea competitions to landscape installations and interventions. With their textile work, they combine their architectural and design skills with the desire to make tactile things.

Their installation work allows them to create an abstracted landscape, an imagined or ideal space, a representation of a real place, simulacrum of a specific condition, or a manipulation of traditional geometry.Giant walnut knitting needles are employed which have been hand turned and lathed by Elsworthy. The Big Knit materials include dip dyed canvas, wire clothesline and reclaimed fabric strips. These elements of craft, the materials
and their execution, deftly extend the medium.
